Brian Perryman

What made you want to become an online instructor at SC?

I actually applied to SC for a position located at Tinker AFB a few years prior. I saw the job posting and remember researching the school and decided to apply.

How do you think your own professional experiences make you an effective online instructor?

I believe my business acumen from years of business experience gives me a unique perspective on a wide variety of industries. My experience is not limited to one area of one industry.

What is one misconception about earning an online degree that you hear often and what to do you say in response to correct it?

The misconception is that people are “paying” for their degree. I start listing the work load from some of my courses and people are surprised at the workload.

How do you help your online learners who might be struggling with their coursework?

I am customer focused. At SC, my students are SC’s customers. Customer service and satisfaction are key to staying in business. I remind students they can reach out to me any time while they are my student and even when they have graduated. I have experience being an online learner and let students know I can relate.

What advice would you give to someone who is concerned about establishing connections and networking in an online environment?

Meeting new people can cause some people anxiety. Some students don’t want other students knowing their personal information like phone number or address. Students need to keep discussions in the class folders and should only share what they are comfortable sharing and that can get the course objectives met.

How do you stay connected with your learners in the online classroom setting?

I will email students periodically and ask them how they are doing and to let me know or their advisor know if they need some assistance.

How do you feel SCPS stands out from other online colleges?

I believe the amount of support given to faculty to assist students that are having difficulties is un-surpassed. I have taught for 11 other institutions and SC is unique in this regard. SC cares about students and faculty.
