Financial Aid FAQ

How do I start the Financial Aid process?

The financial aid process starts with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

How long does it take for SC to receive the FAFSA information?

If you apply online and sign your FAFSA electronically, we can receive the results in about 5 business days.

Why do I have to submit additional verification?

Occasionally, students are selected for verification, a process that requires SC to request additional documentation to validate the FAFSA information for accuracy. Being selected for verification doesn’t mean that you’ve done anything wrong, but it does require you to submit the additional requested documentation before we can approve aid.

How long does the financial aid process take?

From the completion of the FAFSA to the availability of funds in your SC account, the financial aid process takes a minimum of 30 days, so it is important to start the process as soon as possible. You can view more details about the process here.

Why haven’t I heard anything about the status of my financial aid?

Keep in mind that once we have all the necessary paperwork (FAFSA and any additional required documents), it takes about 2 weeks to craft a financial aid offer. In the meantime, be sure to keep an eye on your email for information on additional documentation or for your award letter. Once received, you must accept your award(s) before processing can continue. Feel free to contact our Office of Financial Aid if you would like an update on your package.

What is the SC school code for the FAFSA?

The Southwestern College code is 001940.

What is the difference between part-time and full-time status for financial aid?

Enrollment statuses do impact the amount of aid you can receive, and in order to use federal loans, you do need to be enrolled at least half time. Enrollment statuses are based on credit hours in a semester. Undergraduate enrollment statuses are:

Full Time – 12 hours or more

Three Quarter Time – 9 to 11 hours

Half Time – 6 to 8 hours

Less Than Half Time – 1 to 5 hours

What’s the application deadline for financial aid?

Since SC Professional Studies works on a rolling enrollment, there is no specific deadline to apply for financial aid. However, keep in mind that the financial aid process takes a minimum of 30 days, so the sooner you start the process the more prepared you will be when you are ready to enroll.

When is financial aid applied to my account?

After the start of classes and confirming eligibility, the Office of Financial Aid approves the release of the money by sending an electronic notification to the Student Account Office. This happens weekly as the funds are approved. The approved money is then uploaded into your account. You’ll see the funding move from pending to active on your balance view in Self Service.

Can I use my financial aid to pay for books?

Vouchers for textbooks will be made available to students who qualify and have completed their financial aid file. This voucher will allow you to charge books to your SC account and use financial aid to cover the cost. If the charges create a balance on your account, it will be your responsibility for payment. Contact accounts@sckans.edu for more information.
