Biggest Advantages of Earning a Degree at SC While in the Military

November 21, 2019 4:16pm

With nearly 70% of its online learners being military affiliated and having an 88% graduation rate among its active duty learners, Southwestern College Professional Studies remains committed to educating service members and their spouses. With offices located outside the gates of McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita and on Army base Fort Riley, SC offers a variety of benefits and resources to military members as they work to pursue their degree.

Generous Credit Transfer

As a member of the military pursuing an online degree at SC, you can take advantage of the college’s generous credit transfer policy. SC accepts up to 64 credits from your CCAF degree, CLEP or DSST exams, ACE-evaluated training, and Joint Services Transcript. This greatly helps to minimize the time and cost of completing your degree! SC also offers 10 programs through the AU-ABC program!

Degree Variety

Southwestern offers more than 30 online bachelor, master, doctoral, and certificate programs for you to choose from. Of them, seven meet the qualifications as portable degree with the MyCAA Scholarship, an employment assistance program providing financial assistance to eligible military spouses who are pursuing a license, certification, or associate’s degree in a portable career!

Exclusive Military Tuition Rate & Financial Benefits

To show it’s appreciation to our men and women in uniform, Southwestern College proudly offers and exclusive tuition rate of just $250 per credit hour to active duty military members and their spouses, members of the Guard and Reserve, and DOD civilians. Along with the tuition rate, other financial education benefits are available to you as a member of the military as well, including the following:
• Tuition Assistance (TA)
• Post 9/11 Bill
• Montgomery GI Bill
• MyCAA Scholarship for military spouses
• Military Scholarships

It’s worth pointing out that the military tuition rate and TA combined will nearly eliminate your out-of-pocket-expenses for your degree. Be sure to discuss these options and benefits with your admissions counselor.

Education Resources

As a military learner at Southwestern, you can take advantage of a variety of resources to help as you work to earn your degree! You will have access to a military education coordinator, a military veteran and go-to resource of information for your military education benefits needs. You will also be provided an academic success coach who will help you from your very first class to graduation. They will create a degree plan specific to you and communicate with you what courses you should take each session in order to stay track. You may also utilize the online Deets Library where you can access journal entries, books, articles, and more! And if you have been out of school for a bit and worry your writing might be a little rusty, you can schedule a free one-on-one writing consultation with one of the SC writing instructors in the Online Writing Center. And since it’s understood you may be working to complete coursework outside of normal Professional Studies office hours, after hours technical support is also available to you!

Convenience & Flexibility

While convenience and flexibility are enjoyed by ALL online learners at Southwestern College, they seem to be features especially attractive to service members and their spouses. Since courses are offered 100% online, you can complete coursework on YOUR time! Courses offered every six weeks allow you to work toward degree completion more quickly and prevent you from losing progress due to long winter or summer breaks! You’ll also enjoy the added benefit of having zero proctored exams. And perhaps the best part of earning your degree online at SC is that you’ll never have to worry about how you will complete courses should you have to travel for military training or experience a deployment! If you can access the Internet, you can earn your degree – from anywhere! If life in the military gets too hectic for you to attend classes, you can pause your progress for a period of time and pick back up where you left off when your schedule allows!
