Southwestern College President Signs Statement of Support for Guard and Reserve

Wichita, KS, September 24, 2014 – In an effort to show Southwestern College’s continued support for its military learners, President Dick Merriman signed a statement of support for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.

Established in 1972 as a subdivision of the Department of Defense, The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve was created to increase employer support by encouraging employers to act as advocates for employee participation in the military.  Since its inception, hundreds of thousands of employers, including Southwestern College, have signed statements of support.

ESGR Administrative Support Technician Becky Richardson was on hand for the signing ceremony, saying that signing the statement lets military students know Southwestern College will support its military students and employees.

“It’s an extra step that the employers take to say, ‘I am military friendly,’” said Richardson.

“We’re very committed to serving military learners,” said Southwestern College President Dick Merriman. “Because the college offers a number of programs online, which allow learners to keep studying while they deployed, we’ve seen a lot of growth in our military enrollment through the years.”

Southwestern College continues to serve its learners with flexible schedules that allow them to earn their degree while serving the country.
“We know that they are doing something important for our country and we’re trying to help them do that while they also advance their personal goals and their family goals by getting a college degree,” Merriman said.

The ESGR statement of support has also been signed by Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel.
